now, i tell you this story about summer camp. i could have told you 50 others just like it -- all the times that i got the message that somehow my quiet and introverted style of being was not necessarily the right way to go, that i should be trying to pass as more of an extrovert. and i always sensed deep down that this was wrong and that introverts were pretty excellent just as they were. but for years i denied this intuition, and so i became a wall street lawyer, of all things, instead of the writer that i had always longed to be -- partly because i needed to prove to myself that i could be bold and assertive too. and i was always going off to crowded bars when i really would have preferred to just have a nice dinner with friends. and i made these self-negating choices so reflexively, that i wasn't even aware that i was making them.
now this is what many introverts do, and it's our loss for sure, but it is also our colleagues' loss and our communities' loss. and at the risk of sounding grandiose, it is the world's loss. because when it comes to creativity and to leadership, we need introverts doing what they do best. a third to a half of the population are introverts -- a third to a half. so that's one out of every two or three people you know. so even if you're an extrovert yourself, i'm talking about your coworkers and your spouses and your children and the person sitting next to you right now -- all of them subject to this bias that is pretty deep and real in our society. we all internalize it from a very early age without even having a language for what we're doing.
now to see the bias clearly you need to understand what introversion is. it's different from being shy. shyness is about fear of social judgment. introversion is more about, how do you respond to stimulation, including social stimulation. so extroverts really crave large amounts of stimulation, whereas introverts feel at their most alive and their most switched-on and their most capable when they're in quieter, more low-key environments. not all the time -- these things aren't absolute -- but a lot of the time. so the key then to maximizing our talents is for us all to put ourselves in the zone of stimulation that is right for us.
To accomplish great things, you must dream great dreams. But dreaming alone isn’t enough, you must believe in your dreams and you must act. Without action, even the most grand of dreams evaporate into the ether when left unnurtured in the misty realms of the mind.
Do you dare to be a dreamer? Prepare to go it alone. Dreamers build bridges between the known and the unknown. As you dance your dreams into reality, those who can’t hear the music may think you a fool. Pay no heed to those who would kill your dreams, small minds always do that. Hi everyone. My topic today is Maths in my Eyes.
When I mention the word “maths” some adjectives will come to mind, boring, difficult and complicated. But I think maths is very interesting. It is used almost everywhere in our life and also related to art and music.
We all know one geometrical concept, the golden section. It's very important in painting, sculpture and architecture, such as the Parthenon in Athens and the Venus de Milo. In nature a little pentagonal flower has its golden section. It looks beautiful.
What about its connection with music? Lets take a look at a straight and tight string. Pluck it, and then halve its length, then pluck it again. The sound we hear is the same note but a higher frequency. The Greek mathematician Pythagoras discovered this law and it developed into the musical scale we know today.
Another example is from the famous composer, Bach. When we listen to his music in “Well-Tempered Clavier”， we find the notes are always getting higher .But amazingly, in the end, it comes back to the initial height. Why is it? That's why Bach was great! It's a very interesting maths problem. We call it a paradox.
These days we learn maths at school. The only purpose is to get a high mark. But I personally think that those with curious and creative minds will open the door to the world of maths. Just as Galileo said, “Mathematics is the alphabet with which God has written the universe”。 Maths, in my eyes, is a fascinating subject that needs our passion and imagination. throughout my years of being a student, i’ve had many teachers. none of them are the same, but the one that i’ll never forget and will always miss is my chinese bilingual teacher in the middle school i attended in seattle, ms. ho. she was a skinny, but stylish lady in her 50s. she was different from all the other teachers because she gave me something unforgettable.
ms. ho and i became friends right in the first semester i was in that middle school. at the same time, i was having a really hard time with my subjects. since i had just transferred from a bilingual school, where i had stayed for two months after arriving in the us, my english was horrible; my average grade was below c. i almost thought it impossible to learn english. then, one day she told me she strongly believed that i was capable of controlling my life, and i would be just fine. she said that she found we were much alike: both were stubborn, kind-hearted and a little bit simple-minded. she believed that i had the quality of becoming wise. she even said that she didn’t have any worries about me, about my not learning english. with her encouragement, i found the strength within myself and began to desire to work even harder. as a result, i soon proved her right, and at the end of the semester, i got a 3.8 average grade.
today, i still keep in touch with her, and she still tells me how she believes in me. sometimes, i’d think back, and wonder how i could handle all those things if it wasn’t for her encouragement and trust. could i be the person i am today? then, it struck me: what we need has always been trust and love of others; because these things inspire us to do our best, and to live our life to its fullest.
to sum up, i’d like to say to all of you: let us all appreciate trust and love of others and achieve our full potential in our life!

we've all been taught that we should help people. it is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. it may even win us favors in return. however, we must be realistic. we can't say yes to every request. if we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. sometimes we simply don't have the time to help. in this case, we must know how to say no politely.
when we need to say no, here is one method we can try. first, we should tell the truth. if we really can't do something, we should just say so. second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. we must communicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. a true friend will understand. finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. it can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble. in short, we cannot please everyone all the time. refusing favors is a part of life.

Bidding for the Olympic Games, in a way, an image-creating undertaking. The first and foremost thing is to let people fall in love with the city at first sight, attracting them by its unipue image. What image does Beijing
intend to create for itself once it has the opportunity to host the 20xx Olympics?
It is known to all that the Beijing Municipal Government has already set the theme for the future games: New Beijing,Great Olympics. For me, the 20xx Olympics will be a great green Olympics illuminated with two more special colors, yellow and red.
First, yellow is a meaningful color. The Yellow River is China's Mother River and the descendants of the Yellow Emperor. This color has a special origin and great significance for the Chinese people. Beijing is the capital of New China and previously the capital for nine dynasties in Chinese history. So, yellow will naturally add splendor to the 20xx Games.
Secondly, the 20xx Olympics will be a red pageant.Red is another traditionally cherished color for the whole country. We adore red. On big occasions, we like to decorate our homes in red. It is the color of double happiness, representing joyous moments, auspiciousness, enthusiasm and prosperity. Red is one of the most suitable colors to describe the future of Beijing . Beijing , together with the whole country, is becoming more and more prosperous in the process of modernization. Should the 20xx Olympics be held in Beijing, the whole city will be a sea of red : the red torch,red flags, red flowers, and the radiant faces of millions of joyful people.
Above all, the 20xx Olympics will be a green Olympics. Adding a green ingredient is essential in creating an appealing image, as we can't deny the fact that Beijing, at the moment, is not as green a city as what we like it to be. Striving for an environmentally appealing city has become a central task for all the citizens of Beijing. Big efforts have been made in pollution control, replanting and beautification of the city. According to a project entitled" The Green Olympic Action Plan", between 1998 and 20xx, Beijing, we have invested 100 billion RMB in preserving and protecting the environment. Some 12.5 million trees and over 1 million acres of grass will be planted along the Fourth Ring Road. By then, the city's green area will make up 40% of its total. The city will also dredge its reservoirs used as a water supply to Beijing residents, controlling industrial pollution and moving out the 200 factories presently located within the city proper.
Certainly, all of this is no easy task. But I am sure that all of us have confidence that we will realize these green goals. For now we have the full support and participation of the environmentally conscious citizens. Each citizen is showing great concern for every one of the steps the city government takes. As the saying goes, United, we stand, and a green Beijing will be achieved.

The Dream Came True I wanna welcome everybody here in this cheer team. Thank you for coming here this morning to stand on my side cheering me on. It’s my dream to have the opportunity to challenge all the foreign athletes to the championship at this great occasion: 20xx Olympic Games. Now, the dream came true. As an athlete of China, I’m here to win the gold medal of orienteering for our motherland. I’m so proud of being one of the best players in the world. But could you believe I had been a lazy girl when I was in Junior High. I’m not kidding! At that time, running was my last favorite. I really don’t know how to describe the first time I was on the track. It was horrible. When I started to run, I was simply out of breath. Bach is considered now to be one of the greatest musicians ever. Why is that? I feel it is because of his devotion towards god. Similarly, I have devoted my musical taste and life towards listening to Bach's music. In other words, the way I view Bach is how Bach viewed god. I could still remember very clearly that one afternoon when we fin-ished our class, we went to some other classes to sing songs for them, just like what people do in the states on Christmas Eve. It was so interesting and unforgettable. Justin was an excellent teacher, because he taught us not only how to study English well, but also the way to find out the beauty of the world and the way to be angels to others' lives. I know there was friendship and pure love in our hearts. Facing this valuable emotion neither nationality nor age was important, the real importance lay in faith,under-standing, and care. now more and more people are focusing on the nature. it is no doubt that the nature is important to every human being. no nature, no life. because of the supplies of the nature, we have lived happily for a long time. and we started to gain every thing available from the nature. and this lasted so long a time. today, people have discovered that the nature around is getting worse and worse.
what is threatening the nature? air and water pollution, overharvesting of plant and animal species, overpopulation and so on. overpopulation is the biggest source of pollution. lets take overpopulation as an example.
what does overpopulation feel like? when we move slowly through the city in a tazi. when we enter a crowded slum district. when the temperature is high and when the air is thick with dust and smoke. the streets are crowded with people. the streets seem alive with people. people eating. people washing. people talking. people sleeping. people visiting each other, arguing and screaming. people relieving themselves. people pushing their hands through the taxi windows, begging. people leading animals. people, people, people, people. as we drive slowly through the crowd, sounding the taxis horn, the dust, heat, noise and cooking fires made it like a scene from hell! i admit, frightening.to the nature, overpopulation is a big problem. more people, more pollution. and the big population is threatening the nature every second.
the rapid rise in world population is not creating problems only for the developing countries. the whole world faces the problem that raw materials are being used up at an increasing rate and food production can not keep up with the population increase. people in rich countries make the heaviest demands on the worlds resources, its food, fuel and land, and cause the most pollution. a baby born in the united states will use in his lifetime 30 times more of the worlds resources than a baby born in india. unless all the countries of the world take united action to deal with the population explosion there will be more and more people fighting for a share of less and less land, food and fuel, and the future will bring poverty, misery and war to us all.
for most of the developing countries, it is a good idea to control the population growth. for example, china has carried out birth control for years. and this plan has a GREat effect on the world population.
if the population continues to increase, if the air and water continue to be polluted, if we dont do something to protect wild-plant and wildlife species will be declining. species and biological communities have difficulty adapting to change. economic opportunities and the quality of life of future generations are also put at risk. by protecting nature, we protect ourselves.

with the development of modern science and technology, computers are widely used in every teritories (1) including education. how can a computer be my teacher? how does a computer teach me? multimedia(多媒体)helps a lot in this aspect in recent years, and computer-based training (cbt) has become a popular educational medium (手段). even before the multimedia come (2) up, many different learning systems appeared, using the components and techniques we now associate with the term “multimedia”. multimedia components, such as graphics (动画) , animations , sound and video, make the learning process easier through visualization. animations can present many complex subjects dynamically, but human teachers can not do this on blackboards. multimedia makes our study more lively and interesting. for example, a cd-rom disk named “encarta encyclopedia” contains 650 mb information including images, graphics, music clips, video clips, animations , texts, hotwords, and database search functions. fields involved includes physical
sciences, performance arts, social sciences, politics, military, education and so on. when pressing a button, i can hear american president clinton's speech clip. i may enjoy playing all kinds of musical instruments in the world. i can also see the animation of many physical phenomena. this makes physical concept to be understood deeply (3). the audio features of multimedia can greatly help me learning (4) foreign languages. with its speech output capabilities, i'm no longer dependent on an instructor for proper pronunciation.
how can i interact with a computer? there are many ways, including keyboard, mouse pointer, and touch screen. i often use a keyboard. when i press right keys, i can see and hear whatever i want. information world is at my fingertip. i wish that true speech input-output system would be invented one day.
as teachers, computers have a lot of virtues： they are positive, they have good memories and never lose any information stored in them. they have much knowledge in every field. they can let out all kinds of sounds, and can also improve the efficiency of our study. for example, if i want to, i can skip some chapters so that i can study at my own pace.
